Level 2 — Mould Remediation

At Level 2, your understanding of mould must go beyond the basics. Mould is not a single organism — it is a vast and diverse kingdom of fungi with thousands of species, many of which behave differently under different environmental conditions. In the context of building remediation, the most commonly encountered genera include Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Stachybotrys, and Alternaria, each of which presents different health risks and remediation challenges.

Mould reproduces by releasing spores — microscopic particles that travel through air and settle on surfaces. When conditions are favourable, spores germinate and develop hyphal structures that penetrate into materials. This is why Level 2 remediation deals with materials where mould has moved beyond the surface and requires more invasive intervention to achieve true remediation.

The health risks associated with mould exposure are well established. Mycotoxins produced by certain species — particularly Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as black mould — can cause significant health effects with prolonged exposure. At Level 2, you are working in environments where exposure risk is higher than at Level 1, and your understanding of those risks must guide your protective behaviours at every stage of the job.
