Level 1 — Mould Remediation

Mould is a type of fungi that exists naturally in the environment and plays a role in breaking down organic matter. In built environments, however, mould growth presents a serious health and structural risk. When mould colonises a building, it releases microscopic spores into the air that can cause respiratory illness, allergic reactions, and in some cases, more severe health effects — particularly for vulnerable occupants including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions or compromised immune systems.

Mould requires three conditions to grow: a food source, moisture, and suitable temperature. In Australian buildings, organic building materials — timber framing, plasterboard, carpet, and insulation — provide the food source. Moisture from leaks, flooding, condensation, or high humidity provides the trigger. In most inhabited buildings, temperature is rarely a limiting factor. This means that when moisture is present and unmanaged, mould growth is almost inevitable.

As a Level 1 mould remediation technician, your role involves addressing small, contained areas of mould growth — typically less than one square metre — on non-porous surfaces. You are not trained at this level to work on large-scale contamination, HVAC systems, or highly porous materials. Understanding the limits of your scope is as important as understanding the work itself. Any job that exceeds Level 1 scope must be referred to a higher-level practitioner.
