Why Respiratory Protection Matters in Restoration Work
Respiratory hazards in cleaning and restoration include: airborne mould spores (water damage sites), asbestos fibres (pre-1990 buildings), chemical mists from cleaning agents and disinfectants, aerosols generated by ULV fogging and electrostatic spraying, dust from demolition and material removal, and biological particles in sewage and Category 3 water environments. Selecting the correct respirator for the specific hazard is not optional — wearing the wrong respirator in a hazardous atmosphere provides false confidence with inadequate protection.
Respirator Types and Selection
Disposable P2 respirators (Australian equivalent of N95) filter at least 94% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns and are the standard for mould remediation, asbestos awareness situations, biological hazard work, and chemical spray application. P3 respirators (99.95% filtration) are required for heavy mould remediation or high-concentration particulate environments. Half-face respirators with replaceable P100 cartridges provide higher protection and greater comfort for extended work. Surgical masks do not meet particulate filtration standards and are not appropriate for restoration hazards.
Fit-Check: The Step That Most Workers Skip
A respirator that doesn't seal against your face protects nothing. Before entering any hazardous atmosphere: (1) Put on the respirator and adjust straps so the unit sits flat against the face. (2) Positive pressure check: cover the exhalation valve and exhale — the mask should balloon slightly with no air escaping at the edges. (3) Negative pressure check: cover the inhalation valve and inhale — the mask should collapse slightly and hold the position. If air leaks at the sides, tighten straps or refit. Facial hair along the seal line will prevent an adequate seal — accept this limitation and plan accordingly.
On the Job: Replace your P2 respirator when breathing resistance increases noticeably, when the respirator becomes wet from sweat, when you can smell chemical breakthrough, or at the manufacturer's recommended replacement interval — whichever comes first. A clogged or saturated filter is no longer protective.
