The Essentials module establishes the non-negotiable foundations every cleaning and restoration business must have in place before focusing on growth. Businesses that skip the essentials and jump straight to marketing and sales frequently encounter legal, financial, and operational problems that interrupt growth and in some cases end the business entirely. Build the foundation first.

The 11 Essential Business Foundations

ABN registration: required to operate legally in Australia. Register at abr.business.gov.au.

Business structure: sole trader, company, or trust — each has different tax and liability implications. Discuss with an accountant before choosing.

Business name registration: if trading under a name other than your own legal name, register with ASIC. Cost: $39 per year.

GST registration: mandatory above $75,000 turnover. Register before you cross the threshold.

Public liability insurance: minimum $20 million cover is expected by most commercial clients. Essential from day one.

Professional indemnity insurance: covers claims arising from your professional advice or service failure. Particularly important for restoration businesses providing insurance-referred work.

Workers compensation insurance: mandatory for any business with employees in all Australian states and territories.

Dedicated business bank account: keeps business and personal finances separate and makes accounting significantly simpler.

Basic accounting system: Xero, MYOB, or Quickbooks. Set up before your first invoice.

Written client contract or terms of service: protects you in disputes. One page of clear terms is sufficient for most small businesses.

WHS compliance: understand your obligations under the model WHS Act and relevant state legislation before you start work.

Real Scenario: A sole trader carpenter starts a restoration business without checking his public liability policy — it excludes water damage work. Three months in, a client makes a claim for consequential damage from a drying job. His insurer rejects the claim. He pays out of pocket. A 10-minute call to his insurer before starting the business would have cost an additional $400 per year in premium and saved a $6,000 claim.
