Odour is a sensory perception caused by volatile chemical compounds—odorants—that become airborne and stimulate receptors in our noses. The human nose is incredibly sensitive, able to detect some compounds at concentrations as low as parts per billion.

Odour as an Indicator of Indoor Air Quality Problems
Odour is often the earliest and most obvious indicator that something is wrong with indoor air quality (IAQ). A musty smell is a classic sign of hidden moisture and mould growth, which can lead to structural damage and health risks if unaddressed. Similarly, chemical odours might indicate the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paints, adhesives, or cleaning products.
Understanding the nature of the odour helps pinpoint its source. For example, microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) produced by mould create distinctive musty smells, while combustion odours are smoky and acrid. Identifying these clues helps guide inspection and remediation efforts.
Physical and Psychological Effects of Odour Exposure
Beyond mere nuisance, odours can have tangible health impacts. Exposure to certain odours may cause headaches, nausea, respiratory irritation, or exacerbate asthma and allergies. Sensitive populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly vulnerable.
Psychologically, odours influence how people feel about a space. Unpleasant smells can create anxiety, reduce productivity, and lead to perceptions of uncleanliness or danger. Restoration professionals must appreciate these effects, as client satisfaction is closely tied to how the indoor environment smells after treatment.

Challenges in Odour Assessment and Measurement
Assessing odour is challenging because it is inherently subjective. Instruments like photoionisation detectors (PIDs) or gas chromatography can identify and quantify volatile compounds but cannot replicate human sensory experience. Odours can be intermittent, masked by other smells, or mixed, complicating detection.
Effective odour assessment combines human sensory evaluation with objective measurements. Detailed logs recording odour type, intensity (using standardised scales), location, and timing are vital. Environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and ventilation also influence odour presence and perception.

The Importance of Proper Odour Management in Restoration
Effective odour management requires more than masking unpleasant smells with fragrances. Masking only hides symptoms and may increase occupant irritation. Instead, the goal is to identify and eliminate odour sources through cleaning, drying, source removal, ventilation, and deodorisation technologies.
Successful odour management protects occupant health and comfort, preserves professional reputation, and reduces callbacks or insurance claims. It involves a systematic approach: thorough inspection, accurate identification, targeted treatment, and verification.
